Victor Burgin
Two essays on art photography and semiotics
Robert Self 1976

Essay
Paperback, 24 p.
30 × 21 cm
English

Burgin's theoretical essays emerged prominently in the 1970s, drawing on semiotics and psychoanalysis to interrogate photography's ideological functions. In Two Essays on Art Photography and Semiotics (1976), he analyzed the medium's conventions and its alignment with bourgeois ideology, arguing that photographic meaning arises not from inherent realism but from cultural codes and viewer positioning.
This work marked an early application of structuralist linguistics to visual art, influencing subsequent debates on representation.
