Exploring the theme of power and authority the Black Flags series begun in 1989 when Robert Longo started to depicts the American flag plunged into darkness. These works symbolise the artitst's commitment to denouncing the excesses of oil companies and their impact on the environment. The American emblem takes on the colour of ashes, as if blackened by black gold.

Published on the occasion of Robert Longo exhibition held at Galerie Daniel Templon, Paris from 17 March to 18 April 1990, this beautifully printed catalogue reproduces five mixed media studies (tempera, gesso, screen-printed ink and charcoal on paper) that introduce three photographs of Black Flags bronze sculptures. Exceptionally signed by the artist, it also includes the exhibition invitation card.
