Richard is an artist’s book created by the photographer and videographer Manuel Wetscher. It brings together the previously unpublished photographic archives of his father, Richard Jenewein, which were discovered years after his death from AIDS. As Richard’s illness had long been concealed by the family, and the cause of his death was only discovered by Manuel ten years later, the book explores the evocative power of a distorted narrative. Set within a universal family album documenting his childhood, surrounded by his sister and mother, from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the book (which also includes photographs taken during their travels in Australia, Spain, Greece, India and Yugoslavia, and which ends with the death of his father) explores the effects of a taboo and the poetic power of images.
