The French edition of the 64th issue of Jahresring – an annual German contemporary art magazine that has been published continuously for over 60 years – edited by Wolfgang Tillmans and published to coincide with his exhibition at the Carré d'Art in Nîmes from 4 May to 16 September 2018.
Since the early 2000s, Wolfgang Tillmans has been working on a series of works entitled The Truth Study Centre. This project aims to analyse the concept of universal truth as used in social and political contexts.
Tillmans examines the development of phenomena that challenge social consensus and institutions, which are evident today in the resurgence of right-wing populism, fake news and the psychological concept known as the rebound effect.
Keen to address these issues from different angles, the artist interviewed scientists, politicians, journalists and social workers. The publication also includes analytical texts and studies that shed further light on our cognitive and ethical reactions, as well as our behaviour on online networks when confronted with statements that contradict our political beliefs.
Wolfgang Tillmans combines these texts with his own visual works and images gleaned from the internet and publications.
For this edition, Tillmans has produced works printed in four colours on a photocopier dating from the 1990s, using a pioneering digital collage technique that echoes the complexity of the phenomena he seeks to examine.
