For Erich Weiss, the world of cinema is a central source of inspiration for his artistic practice. The appropriation of images runs like a thread through his entire body of visual work. In Mirrors Mirrored, he draws on a collection of film stills from films by directors he admires. The protagonists appear before mirrors — sitting, standing, observing themselves. Using text fragments written in ‘écriture automatique’, Weiss interweaves the images and opens up reflections on the functions of mirrors and mirroring. The signified and the signifier are constantly renamed and described, as if endlessly reflected in countless distorted mirrors. The result is a visual poem in which the protagonists appear within an infinite hall of mirrors.
