Published to coincide with the retrospective held at Centre Pompidou from April to June 2004, this book presents itself as Chantal Akerman’s “artist’s studio” where she unravels the thread running through her life and work.
Her writing in the present tense fills the pages and allows her to organize texts, working documents, illustrations, and photos, much like during the editing of a film. She writes and narrates: her work is a narrative; her films were first and foremost texts.
Excerpts from screenplays, drafts of short stories, film projects—whether realized or not—location photos, and sequences of stills follow one another, forming a self-portrait of the wonderful Chantal Akerman.
