La Banlieue de Paris is the Guilde du Livre’s first photographic album devoted to Paris. A text of around fifty pages by Blaise Cendrars introduces 130 plates by Robert Doisneau, who was still relatively unknown at the time.
Cendrars’ ‘personal and often disillusioned view’ of the Parisian suburbs clashes with ‘the touching kindness (…) shown by the enthusiastic photographer, carried by his camera towards a subjective optimism. This divergence of perspective between the photographer and the writer allows for a nuanced portrait of this other Paris, which the public thus has the opportunity to (re)discover.
