This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Ann Veronica Janssens’ curated by Liliane Dewachter at the MUHKA (MUseum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen) from January 31st until March 30th 1997.
Through her installations, Ann Veronica Janssens offers a highly personal experience of movement, time and bodily perception – and not just visual perception. The space becomes infinite, increasingly abstract, like a ghostly space in which there is no immediate system of recognition, leading to a total loss of bearings. In this ‘labyrinth’ of the senses, the boundary between seeing and touching becomes blurred, and experimentation takes precedence over our supposed visual knowledge.
The pages of this landscape-format catalogue attempt to convey the unique psycho-sensory experience of space and light that the artist presents to the museum and visitors through her work. With a great economy of means (intangible fluids, gases, sound and light waves, aqueous elements), Ann Veronica Janssens' work shows nothing, but rather encourages us to see.
Foreword by Liliane Dewachter, curator.
Essay by Marianne Van Leeuw (Why is a gesture convincing and freedom unaccustomed ?).
