In 1996, Alec de Busschère exhibited his project Under Construction! at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi. Six spatial proposals were on display, each bearing a title (an anagram of the artist’s surname, such as ‘Bruce Dehess’) and comprising several objects – a model, a video and documentation. Each proposal is developed using the same process: the artist compiles a set of data on a fictional location; a writer transforms this raw data into a text describing the location. Entrusted to an architect, this text becomes a preliminary design for the space. All these elements (name, data, text, sketches) enable the artist to create a 1/15th-scale model of the interior of the site, which is then filmed; the video will be projected at a scale of 1:1. Under the guise of a game modelled on a sort of ‘Chinese whispers’, Alec de Busschère examines the transmission of information in any project, which leads both to a loss of information and a densification of the work – in this case, through the creations of a writer and an architect.
